While we would like to include pipelines in the Buildable Area analysis, the readily available data is currently not appropriate for constraint analysis.
The publicly available EIA data on pipeline locations (the Pipelines layer in the U.S. Nationwide layers section) is only accurate to within +/- 1000 ft of the actual route, and includes only major pipelines. Consequently, this data is not accurate enough for use in buildable area calculations or establishing setbacks.
We currently lack a broadly available and accurate national pipeline dataset for automated analysis. While PHMSA offers more precise data online, their strict terms on exporting and republishing prevent us from utilizing it outside their system.
A higher-quality dataset is available in the Texas layers menu, provided by the Texas Railroad Commission. While our current analysis focuses on nationwide datasets, we hope to offer more state-specific analysis in the future and will likely incorporate this layer then.
