Add and analyze custom power lines with capacity information for smarter project siting.
Steps
- Select Add Grid.
- Select Power Lines.
- Select from Layer.
- Select Choose Source and scroll down to Transmission Lines (EIA/HIFLD).
- Once the source is selected, the Geolocated Transmission Lines layer will load in on the map. With these on, select Apply Boundary and select from the several available options. Alternatively, draw a boundary around the line(s) of interest.
The project now has the geolocated transmission line of interest. Please note the voltages of each geolocated line keep their names for later use.
- Select Add Grid.
- Select Substations.
- Select from Layer.
- Select Choose Source and select the scenario layer that applies for your project. For example, if siting for a solar project, select from the Discharging Scenarios, while if siting for a battery project, select from the Charging Scenarios.
- Add in the two geolocated buses at both ends of the line. In this case, the two dark purple dots on the map. Simply click on the point, and select Add to Project.
The project will now be updated with the geolocated line and the substation elements at the ends of the line like the picture below.
- Select the substations to keep their names for later use.
- To see the Capacity Information for the line of interest, navigate to the Layers catalog in the top right of the project and select it.
- Navigate to the Premium - Capacity folder for the region and open the Line Headroom Capacity folder. Turn on the layer that was selected while adding in the buses.
- With the Capacity layer on, select the straight line connected to the substation elements. In this case, it is the dark purple line.
When you select the line, you can confirm the To Station Name and the From Station Name in the popup window with the information that was saved in Step 11. You can also confirm the voltage with the information that was saved before that.
The popup window will show you all the available information for the Capacity line when you click on the Capacity line.
